You can contribute your thoughts like Seedly here.

They say pregnancy is one of the best phases of life and you must make the most of it. However, considering how expensive it is to give birth and bring up a child in Singapore, it is only normal to be clouded with worries about money.

Instead of stressing, take a look at these easy tips to save money during and after pregnancy.

Simple money-saving tips for pregnant ladies in Singapore

1. Rent maternity clothes

If you have an important official meeting or a formal dinner party to attend while you are heavily pregnant, what you will wear will be the top concern. However, you don’t need to invest in a fancy, designer gown or dress as you can rent one for a fraction of its original price!

Head straight to Maternity Exchange at Marina Square to rent out the dress of your dreams. They have an unending variety of fashionable clothing to buy and rent both along with loads of other maternity and baby essentials.

If you are in the mood to buy a few things online, they have a website too! Don’t forget to use your American Express CapitaCard to be rewarded with 5X STAR$ per S$1 that you spend.

2. Book a public hospital

Singapore is the hub of excellent medical services. This holds true for both public and private hospitals. So cuts costs and book public hospitals such as National University Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. They have top-class treatments, supportive staff, and a homely feel. The food served as well as the aftercare is great too so you have nothing to worry about.

They also provide alternate birthing options like water birth and are more than happy to meet your post-birth demand such as skin-to-skin. However, due to the sheer demand of these hospitals, you might have to wait a bit to be treated or might not get the room of your choice.

Thankfully, these are hardly any deal-breakers, especially considering how much cost you will save over delivering at a private hospital.

3. Use Medisave Maternity Package

Amid all the excitement around the pregnancy, don’t forget to use your Medisave Maternity Package. You can use this package for delivery expenses as well as pre-delivery medical expenses.

According to the Ministry of Health, ‘Under the Medisave Maternity Package, you may withdraw up to S$450 for each day in the hospital, plus S$900 for pre-delivery medical expenses and an additional surgical withdrawal limit between S$750 and S$2,150 depending on the type of delivery procedure.’

This facility is available for births at both public and private hospitals. The Ministry of Health also provides Medisave grant for each Singaporean newborn.

4. Rent baby gear

Babies outgrow stuff quickly. So, the fancy, super expensive pram you have been eyeing at the mall is not a good idea after all. It is better to rent these gears and save costs.

Sites such as The Baby Specialist, the toy rental club, and Singaporebabyrentals have a variety of items such as booster seats, play yards, bouncers and swings.

You can also rent items to see if your baby likes them, or is comfortable using them and then maybe decide on actually investing in them.

5. Buy secondhand items

Let’s admit it. Babies are cute but super expensive. The expense of their clothes, toys, and feeding gears can give you sleepless nights. So, it would be a great idea to buy pre-loved items and save a ton.

Websites such as Gumtree and Carousell are marketplaces to buy and sell general stuff. They are also an excellent place to get great deals on secondhand baby products.

So, hunt them down.

You also have the option to use mobile apps such as Bakipa and Facebook pages such as Second-hand Marketplace for Moms (Singapore) to buy baby items. The good thing is that once your baby outgrows something, you can sell it on all these platforms too. It is a great way to unclutter and earn.

6. Shop baby essentials smartly

Babies are tiny but they require so much stuff! Trust us, your house will be filled with baby items even before the little one arrives. When it comes to essentials such as diapers, wet wipes, and formula powders, make sure you do enough research, compare prices, and then buy.

Also, don’t be tempted to buy the largest packs right away. Babies are super delicate so all products might not suit them. Make sure you use the product at least for a week before investing in any bulk purchase. Check multiple outlets for bargains and discounted bulk items.

There you go! With these tips, you don’t need to worry about overshooting your pregnancy budget. Just relax and enjoy.
