As the Purple Parade kickstart its movement at Suntec City on 2 November, Seedly hopes to be part of the movement to promote awareness and celebrate the abilities of persons with special needs!

We will be releasing a series of articles, resources, and workshops for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Singapore. This is done in hopes of helping to improve financial literacy for persons with disabilities and raise awareness for PWDs to the general public.

As the writer and head of this small initiative, supporting the inclusion of PWDs in Singapore is something that I hold close to heart. As I hope to make this resource as comprehensive as possible for those who are accessing it, I would appreciate the community’s input as well! If you know of any current gaps in financial knowledge that the community would like to know of, don’t hesitate to let me know about it. 🙂

Today, to raise public awareness and celebrate the people among us with different abilities, here’s a quick overview of what the purple parade has to offer, as well as a list of fun activities and discounts in Singapore for PWDs and their caregivers can enjoy!

Source: Giphy

The Purple Parade is a unifying national platform to promote awareness and celebrate abilities of persons with special needs.

The core of The Purple Parade movement is to ensure that people with special needs are included in the main chapter of Singapore’s growth and have equal access to education, employment, transport, and social networks.

It will be held at Suntec City (outdoor spaces between Tower 1 & Tower 5) on 2 Nov, where our traditional march-past Contingent will take the form of a street parade!

What Can You Expect There?

3. Taxi Subsidy Scheme

The Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TSS) is for persons with permanent disabilities who are medically certified as unable to take public transport, and totally dependent on taxis for travel to school, work, or employment-related training.

How Much Is Subsidised?

The subsidy amounts will depend on:

  • Whether applicants are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents;
  • Per capita monthly household income (PCHI); and
  • Distance travelled between home and school/ work/ training.

For more details on who is eligible and how to apply for this, take a look at this website!

4. Disabled Persons Scheme

Source: Giphy

The Disabled Persons Scheme (DPS) is a means-tested scheme that supports Singapore Citizens with permanent physical disabilities who are unable to use public transport (i.e. bus and/or MRT). This is mainly for PWDs with physical disabilities, who require a vehicle to earn a living.

PWDs who are fit to drive, gainfully employed, and need a vehicle to earn a living can apply for this scheme.

Eligible drivers for the scheme are exempted from paying the premium for the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) and the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) when they purchase a vehicle.

You can register for the Disabled Persons Scheme through this website.

Fun Activities And Discounts For PWDs & Their Caregivers In Singapore

The Purple Parade shouldn’t have to be a one-off celebration for persons with disabilities in Singapore. With schemes that increase PWD’s access to places outside of their homes, coupled with fun activities that encourage PWDs and their caregivers to go out and have fun with family and friends, we hope that Singapore grows to become a more inclusive space for the community.
