What is Yakiniku?
Yakiniku, which means “grilled meat” in Japanese, is basically the Japanese version of a barbecue! But what makes it so special are the various cuts of tender meat, flavorful sauces used and fresh vegetables.
In this article, we’ll be comparing the prices of affordable Yakiniku prices in Singapore using Karubi (boneless short rib) as the common benchmark!
Yakiniku Warrior
If you don’t mind eating Yakiniku at a coffee shop, Yakiniku Warrior is exactly what we Yakiniku lovers are looking for. Cheap and good!
Starting from just $6 for a 100g chicken set meal and $5 for 100g of Karubi, you’d be hard-pressed to find a cheaper alternative in Singapore. That said, the quality isn’t subpar either, with food reviewers agreeing that the meat offered is of higher standards than your average Japanese barbecue buffet.

Yakiniku Like
You’ve most likely come across Yakiniku Like, with its nine restaurant chains peppered across Singapore. It is a “fast-food style” Yakiniku restaurant with smokeless grills in an air-conditioned space.
For typical Yakiniku restaurants, this is pretty much the best value you can get with its cheapest set meal (pork & chicken, 100g) priced at $9.90. Karubi prices are also the cheapest among similar Yakiniku restaurants at just $6.50 for 100g of Karubi!
Despite being a restaurant, all prices shown are also nett of GST and service charges, making it one of my personal go-to’s for a quick Yakiniku fix.

Yakiniku Ok
Nestled in White Sands, this Yakiniku Ok is touted as a no-frills, Halal-certified Yakiniku restaurant. Its prices are quite affordable with the Toriniku (chicken) set meal priced at $10.80 and a 100g of Karubi going for $7.30.
Yakiniku Ok also serves its very own OK Sambal Sauce, apart from the usual BBQ and garlic sauce.
One thing to note is that it doesn’t serve pork or lard since it is now a Halal-certified restaurant.

Hey! Yakiniku
Conveniently located at Bugis Junction, Hey! Yakiniku is another great option for Yakiniku for affordable grilled meat.
Hey! Yakiniku’s set meals start from $8.90 for Pork Belly & Chicken Thigh (100g), which is the cheapest set meal among the other Yakiniku restaurants in this article! However, their a la carte pricing is a little pricier at $7.90 for 100g of Karubi.

Yakiniku-GO
Part of RE&S group which also owns other brands such as Ichiban Boshi and Ichiban Sushi, Yakiniku-GO is another restaurant chain with six outlets in Singapore. It also has a more upmarket version called Yakiniku-GO Plus, but we won’t cover that here.
While Yakiniku-GO is a tad bit more pricey with its 100g chicken set meal starting at $10.90 and its 100g Karubi at $7.90, it does have something going for it that the others don’t…a membership programme!
Yep! If you love Japanese food, you’ll likely know of memberships such as J Passport and &Rewards (RE&S membership). For &Rewards, spending $20 at Yakiniku-GO or other RE&S brands will earn you stamps that can be redeemed for free items and cash vouchers!
So if you frequent Yakiniku restaurants, you might want to consider patronising Yakiniku-GO.

Yakiniku Restaurant Hacks
If you’re looking to save even more when eating Yakiniku and don’t really eat all the sides that set menus provide, consider ordering a la carte! Why waste money on things you don’t eat and waste food right?
If you’re in a big group, ordering set meals could cost you more as well. Instead, order large quantities of various meats and share rice bowls, especially if there are people in your group who don’t eat much rice.
Most importantly, always keep a watchful eye on your niku (Japanese: meat) before it becomes chao taΒ (Hokkien: burnt). My personal strategy is to preheat the grill at the highest level (typically 5) before cooking the meat at level 2 or 3 while eating. That way, you get to eat ASAP with everything fresh off the grill!
Last but not least, don’t forget to take advantage of promotions, memberships and remember to pay with a credit card to maximise your spending! Happy grilling!
