Catch Lobsters & Crabs From Just $14/Hour: Best Prawning Spots in Singapore

profileXue Miao

I used to wonder why people would want to catch their own prawns.

Having to sit hours by the pool waiting for these critters, when you can comfortably stroll in an air-conditioned NTUC and grab a bag of them at a potentially lower price.

I’ve since learnt that prawning is never just about cooking and eating your loots.

It’s also an outlet for rest and relaxation, or even serving as an activity for late nights that are coupled with heart to heart talks.

In fact, prawning has blown up to become one of the hottest hobbies around, with several interest groups spotting a huge following online.

Prawn enthusiasts would dish out prawning tips to help newbies to increase their loots, hoping to make prawning a less expensive hobby.

If you’re worried about spending 5 hours catching 3 prawns for $50, fret not.

Prawning companies have recently been getting REALLY creative with their releases.

Do you know that you can now get mud crabs and Boston lobsters from these prawning spots?!

How does making your own lobster rolls sound?

With frequent lucky draws and a wider range of seafood, prawning seems to be more value-for-money as compared to the past.

So if you’re running out of things to do in Singapore and wish to try something different, this is an activity that’s definitely worth a try!

Looking to save EVEN more money from your lifestyle? We gotcha!

Is It Worth It To Go for Prawning Now, or Is It Still Too Expensive?

Let’s say you’re Mike.

Mike is a newbie who isn’t great at fishing.

However, he has beginner’s luck and also tapped on some new prawning knowledge that was gained from this article. 😉

He managed to catch 25 prawns within 3 hours, and also one lucky Boston lobster.

This is how much his loots would cost if he does a grocery run at his favourite supermarket:

ItemCost
Prawns$15/kg (Assuming 25 prawns make up 1 kg)
Live Boston Lobster$36
Total Purchase Price from Supermarket$51
Amount Spent on Prawning Session (3 hours)$42

Okay lah… We recognise that this is largely dependent on whether you’ll be able to catch any crabs or lobsters at all.

But the factor of fun and time spent with your loved ones ain’t factored in it as well so…

Personally, I would think it’s pretty worth it since there are so many ways to win attractive prizes now as well!

Quick Tips on Maximising Your Catches

While I love my prawns, I’m definitely not a prawning expert.

Which is why I’ve scanned through the internet to seek the opinions of true experts, teaching us newbies how to potentially maximise our catches and have heckin’ prawn feast by the end of the night.

Source: Gfycat

(Not at this level, of course.)

1) Preparation of Bait

Cut the baits into smaller chunks, to about the size of a green bean. Try not to smash it up as that would make it more difficult to stay on the hook. Also, mount the bait as close to the sharp tip as possible.

2) Position of Float

The float (that is attached to the rod) should be 1 to 1.5cm above the surface, and the fishing hook must be sharp enough to stay on one’s thumbnail.

3) Determining the Bite

One way to determine the bite is by observing the float. The float would start to move against the direction that it is being dragged. A dip in the float would follow as well.

4) When to Strike

It is advised not to strike immediately when the float sinks. Instead, slowly count to 10 while tightening the line and leaving the float undisturbed. After which, use the strength of your wrist instead of the hand to pull the line up.

5) How To Deal With Pincers

Prawns can have pretty big pincers and can get aggressive when they are hooked.

It could be helpful to cut the claws away using clippers and scissors provided at the facility, which would make it a lot easier to get the hook out.
