Japan has finally reopened!

We can now fly to Japan for a free-and-easy holiday without worrying about daily arrival caps, quarantines, and pre-arrival PCR tests (for fully vaccinated travellers)!

But, before you go rushing in, there are some things we need to know, and most importantly, airfares have gone through the roof with all that pent-up Japan travel demand.

So here are the cheapest months for some of the popular airlines and useful articles to prepare for your Japan holiday!

TL;DR: Cheapest Flights From Singapore to Tokyo Every Month Till April 2023

Note: All return trip fares are direct flights with no layovers and are correct as of 11 October 2022. Prices may differ when you book your flight.

Japan Airline Booking – Don’t Be Fooled With Cheap Prices!

Oftentimes, us being kiasu (Hokkien: scared of losing out) Singaporeans, we would go for the cheapest flight tickets that we can find. However, many budget airlines remove components that are essential for an overseas holiday such as check-in baggage weight to reduce the face value.

Thus, I have made sure that the prices reflected above are inclusive of at least 20kg of checked baggage and an in-flight meal since a flight to Japan will take around seven hours.

With Scoot, for example, flight prices to Japan are often advertised as ~$266 for November 2022. However, this is only for a one-way without checked baggage or a meal (worth $79 for a one-way flight). When you include those and consider a round trip, the price shoots up to $690.

What’s The Cheapest Airline to Japan Now?

Source: ZIPAIR

Based on my findings, ZIPAIR currently provides the cheapest airfares that include checked baggage and an in-flight meal. They are a Japanese budget airline and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines. Just like Scoot is under SIA.

Personally, I believe this is the best value flight to Japan from Singapore as the Japanese are known for their high standards in everything, including their budget airlines! I’ve flown with ANA before and if you’re worried about a language barrier when taking a Japanese airline, fret not! They speak really fluent English! Even better than some Singaporeans if I do say so myself.

If you’re not so keen on budget airlines, I would recommend just flying with SIA. Sure, there are cheaper alternatives like EVA air or Malaysian Airlines. However, if you are willing to spend more for better service, might as well pay a little more for the second-best airline in the world! On the plus side, you get to support local Singaporeans too.

How Can I Get the Cheapest Airfare to Japan?

Book Early

When it comes to flight booking, the common tip is to book your flight at least two to three months earlier for cheaper fares.

What Days Are Flights Cheapest?

Depending on the airline, there are also certain days when flights are cheaper.

Source: Singapore Airlines

As you can see, for Singapore Airlines, flights tend to be cheaper on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays while being more expensive on the weekends and Mondays.

Based on what I found out, Mondays and weekends are typically more expensive as there are more people going on business trips during those days and Mondays are also the day when airlines review the flight ticket prices.

Fly During Off-Peak Seasons

As seen above, January and February are some of the cheapest months to fly as these are the off-peak months. If you want to experience the Cherry Blossom season which starts in mid-March, you’ll have to fork out more.

For cherry blossom lovers, I’d advise booking a flight to Japan during the last few days of March right now as you’d be paying less compared to the peak month of April!

Remember to Make Use of Credit Cards and Loyalty Programmes!

Aside from booking tips for a cheaper flight, don’t forget to use your miles credit cards to pay for your flights! If you have sufficient miles, now is also a good time to redeem them although you may find it tough as airlines are trying to recoup from their pandemic losses.
