On this week’s Coffee Talk, we are fortunate to have lifestyle influencer Joey Ching How share with us his views on personal finance.
How do you decide on what you do financially?
I imagine myself 10-20 years from now and picture what kind of activities I would like to be doing, what kind of hobbies I would be indulging in, and the responsibilities that would be on my shoulders. Will the amount that I am currently earning, saving and investing in be enough to finance the future me?
What do you personally think is the best way to keep track of your expenses?
Contrary to other money-management tips, I find that the best way to keep track of my own expenses is to pay for everything with your credit card. Unlike cash, credit cards allow me to keep track of my expenses every month. I am able to see which are my biggest expenses, what kind of things I am buying, and whether these buys are needs or wants. If I spent something on my “wants” this month, I will control and discipline myself not to spend anything on wants again for the next 2 months. I also try to keep my credit card bills below 4 digits every month.
What does being financially healthy looks like to you?
1. Being able to use credit cards for their rewards and perks, not for necessity.
2. Not feeling guilty when I spend on occasions, on travels, and other celebrations.
3. Being able to be generous when it comes to donating money or helping out with a cause.
4. Having my fridge fully stocked with chocolates… and the occasional beers.
