If you need to book a ComfortDelgro taxi, take note.

From 1 July 2023, land transport company ComfortDelGro Corporation Ltd (SGX: C52) will increase its platform fee by $0.70 when you book a taxi or private-hire ride via its app.

Source: ComfortDelGro Taxis

Not to mention that ComfortDelGro has about 8,840 ComfortDelgro cabs, which make up 63% of the taxis in Singapore, according to The Straits Times.

Unlike Comfort, ride-hailing provider Gojek will replace its $0.70 fixed platform fee with a tiered fee based on the duration of a trip and the distance travelled, starting from 3 July 2023.

Here’s all you need to know about the latest changes!

Why Did ComfortDelGro Increase Taxi Fares?

This new platform fee will apply across taxis, and limousine transfers made through its CDG Zig app,Ā but not to rides booked via phone calls, text messages, or street hails.

The reason for this introduction?

ComfortDelGro stated that it’s so that they can improve the quality of its point-to-point transport service; the CDG Zig app has gone through several feature changes and currently carries merchant deals, and has services such as restaurant reservations and food takeaways, electric vehicle charging points, and private bus charter.

Would the CDG Zig app become a super app? I reckon it might be, given that new features will surface.

If we use the past as a reference, we can expect other taxi companies: Premier Taxis, Prime Taxi, SMRT Taxis and Trans-Cab, to follow ComfortDelGro’s lead and increase taxi fares too.

ComfortDelGro Metered Taxi Fares

For the uninitiated, there’s a temporary one-cent increase in distance and waiting time fares, which was introduced on 4 April 2022 for all ComfortDelGro taxis. This has been extended till 30 June 2024.

Gojek’s Fixed Platform Fee to Tiered Fee

Conversely, Gojek is removing its fixed $0.70 platform form for each trip from 3 July 2023.

In place of this pricing system will be a tiered fee based on the duration of the trip and the distance travelled. This means that your ride fares may be up to $0.10 cheaper or up to $0.30 more expensive due to the change.

Gojek will also increase Trip start faresĀ acrossĀ GoCar XL and GoGar XL Kids by $0.30 per trip.

For GoCar Premium, the starting fares will increase by $0.45 per trip from 6am to 11.59pmĀ and $6.45Ā a trip between 12am and 5.59am.

GoCar Premium trips are also subject to the same additional fees as GoCar trips:

  • Waiting fee of $5 per 5min (no service fee)
  • Edit Destination fee of $5 (subject to 15% service fee)
  • A cancellation fee of $4 (no service fee)

What About Grab, TADA or Ryde?

Unless you don’t take a cab at all, you would’ve known that ComfortDelGro is not the only ride-hailing platform that has introduced a platform fee, which is in line with those that have already raised theirs.

Grab first announced that it would raise its platform fee from $0.30 to $0.70 on 5 May.

Similarly, TADA charges $0.55 before the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for fares below $18, and for fares above $18, the platform fee is $0.75 before GST.

Are Third-Party Booking Apps Cheaper Than Conventional Taxis?

Not really.

You might not save more money if you switch over, as most ride-hailing service providers use demand-based dynamic pricing models.

Suppose many people use ride-hailing services after the taxi fare hike. In that case, ride-hailing fares will likely increase due to increased demand if the supply of private hire vehicles remains constant.

Alternatively, you can consider car-sharing services in Singapore if you need the use a car:

Otherwise, it’s best to stick with your BMW.

No, not that BMW.

I’m talking Bus MRT and Walk (BMW).
