What is Fengshui?
Feng Shui (风水, translates to “the way of wind and water”), also known as Chinese geomancy, is an ancient Chinese practice involving the arranging of objects and space to influence the energy forces, thereby achieving harmony, prosperity, and peace for people and their surrounding environment.
The practice has its roots associated with Taoism and is popular even in Western cultures.
Feng Shui stems from the Taoist belief in chi (气, life force) which is made up of two opposing and inseparable forces/energy – yin (阴) and yang (阳), and the belief is that by balancing both elements, you can improve the flow of positive chi in your life, and keep the negative chi away.
There are a set of principles that will guide what you need to change.
By principles, I meant five nature elements – metal, wood, water, fire, and earth – and each element represents a quality:
- Metal: focus and order
- Wood: creativity and growth
- Water: emotion and inspiration
- Fire: leadership and boldness
- Earth: strength and stability
Most often than not, Feng Shui masters will pull out an octagon compass called the Luo pan (罗盘, Compass) that determines the Bagua (八卦, Eight Trigrams) that denotes eight natural phenomena – heaven, lake, fire, thunder, earth, mountain, water, and wind – which are then superimposed on the various aspects of life.
This includes wealth/prosperity, health, marriage/love, fame, family, creativity & children, knowledge & skills, career, and helpful people.
Typically, the Bagua is used to read the room (literally), or just as a Feng Shui tool to ‘cure’ negative energy.
So, to create a living or working space where there will be a balance of energy when people buy a house, renovate their flats, or look for a new office, Feng Shui masters are often consulted.
