This time, the FIFA World Cup subscription prices have increased by 4 per cent compared to 2018. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to most of us with inflation skyrocketing in Singapore.
Is it possible for telcos to recoup?
It’s no secret that the price for rights to broadcast has been increasing over the years, which party explains the rise in prices.
However, this year, with estimates of the price for rights exceeding $25 million coupled with an all-time short timeframe for telcos to advertise, it seems like a pretty tough battle for telcos.
Not to mention, streaming services are now dominating the market with the likes of Netflix and Disney+ and the World Cup is happening in the middle of the season, making it hard for telcos to bundle it with Premier League subscriptions.
Last but not least, most World Cup matches will be streamed late at night and into the wee hours of the morning, adding another deterrent for potential customers to justify paying subscription prices and missing out on matches.
What’s the Best Way to Catch the FIFA World Cup?
For those of us who want to watch all 64 games of the World Cup in the comfort of our homes, your best bet would be with StarHub as they offer a variety of features with the StarHub TV+ app and the flexibility to watch the matches on virtually any device without the need for a Set-Top box.
But if you are already a Singtel or meWATCH customer, subscribing to the World Cup through the respective providers isn’t so bad either.
That said, all providers have abysmal reviews for their respective apps.
Many users have cited technical problems and poor customer support. Some football fans have also missed (Premier League) games due to such problems.
So, if you want a guaranteed seamless viewing experience, your best bet would probably be to watch via a Set-Top box from either Singtel or StarHub.
Where can I watch all World Cup matches for free?
If you want to catch the entirety of the FIFA World Cup 2022 for “free”, you can also look out for sports bars to watch the matches with fellow fans. Sure, you would probably need to fork out some money for food to be there but hey, you’ll get the fun atmosphere too!
Apart from that, there is no other way to catch all matches for free in Singapore, not legally anyways.
