PSA: Free Mouth Gargle for All Singaporean Households by Temasek Foundation

Community cases have been on a rise these days, and the Government has just announced the extension of our current preventive measures.

Besides getting ourselves tested frequently with ART self-test kits, we’re also encouraged to stay home to reduce the spread of the virus.

Temasek is rolling out another initiative to help us combat COVID-19, offering free mouth gargle for every Singaporean household.

Here’s all you need to know about it!

TL;DR: Free StayWell Mouth Gargle from Temasek Foundation: How To Redeem It

Source: Temasek Foundation

The StayWell Mouth Gargle will be the mouthwash that will be distributed.

It is a Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) mouth gargle that kills germs that cause sore throat.

The free mouth gargle will be distributed in two ways:

  • Self-collection of 250ml bottle for interested households
  • Distribution of 125ml bottle to 1 to 4-room HDB households

Register & Self-Collect for Interested Households

This programme is open to all Singapore residential households with an SP residential water bill account number.

Each household can collect a bottle of 250ml mouth gargle which comes with a 25ml measuring cup.

To be eligible, residents must register online from 15 Nov to 10 Dec 2021 using their SP residential water bill account.

Your home address and email contact will be required as part of the verification process.

Residents may select their preferred time and collection point from about 40 locations, which includes selected Singapore Pools branches, shopping centres and Singapore EXPO.

Self-collection will begin on 22 Nov to 12 Dec 2021 and is subject to availability.

Don’t worry if stocks were to run out, as there may be a second round of self-collection (after CNY period) should demand exceed expectations.

Residents may also collect on behalf of family members and friends as long as they have their SP residential water bills, and booking confirmation email or WhatsApp message.

There will be an additional bottle of 125ml of mouth gargle that will be delivered to each letterbox of 1 to 4-room HDB households.

It comes with a measuring cup of 30ml.

This will happen between 25 Oct to 9 Nov 2021.

Residents may download the SingPost mobile app to track the delivery status of this additional bottle to their letter box, using their SingPass login.

If you’re eligible for this, you may also register for self-collection of the 250ml mouth gargle as well.

How To Use the Mouthwash

According to Temasek Foundation, you may gargle up to 2 to 4 times a day whenever you feel a sore throat coming, or for general oral hygiene.

You may gargle with 15 ml or one capful (25/30ml) of the mouth gargle for about 30 seconds.

Please consult a doctor before using any PVP-I mouth gargle or throat spray if you are:

  • pregnant or breastfeeding
  • below six years old
  • allergic to PVP-I or iodine products
  • having thyroid issues; or
  • using products containing mercury

Please consult a doctor immediately if:

  • you have any discomfort or allergic reaction when using the mouth gargle; or
  • our sore throat or other symptoms persist for more than 2 days, or worsen

Can This Mouthwash Help Prevent Me From Getting COVID-19?

Source: Reddit

As we all know, one of the ways that the COVID-19 virus spreads is through respiratory droplets (which explains the use of facial masks).

The COVID-19 strain is also similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2).

According to the Japanese Dental Science Review, evidence has shown that 0.5% Povidone-iodine (PVP-I)  in mouthwash or gargle can reduce the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oral cavity, and oropharynx.

Extended rinsing with an appropriate dilution of PVP-I, for more than two minutes, up to four times a day, is advocated to reduce the incidence of airborne respiratory infections.

The use of mouthwash is therefore a simple and inexpensive way in helping to reduce the risk of cross-transmission between individuals.

Time to gargle up, my friends!
