Google’s vision for the Pixel is to bring together both hardware and software with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the centre of it all. And with the Pixel 8, they seem to have done just that with their all-new Tensor G3 processing chip.

There’s a lot of cool new features to go through so strap in and let’s dive straight in!

This time around, the Google Pixel 8 launch prices have increased as compared to the Google Pixel 7, up to a $200 increase from the Pixel 7 Pro (256GB) to the Pixel 8 Pro (256GB).

However, I believe that this price increase is justified given the new features and extended software support which I will touch on later.

As for the Pixel Watch 2, prices will start from $525.

Hardware Features

Display

Google Pixel 8 Rose

The first thing you will notice is just how bright and smooth the displays on the Pixel 8 series are. To be precise, the new Actua displays on the Pixel 8 are 42% brighter than the Pixel 7. The display on the Pixel 8 have also been upgraded to support up to 120Hz, bringing it on par with the Pixel 8 Pro.

Camera

Needless to say, the cameras on the Pixel 8 lineup has been improved too. On the Pixel 8 Pro specifically, the upgraded camera systems let’s you take Macro Photos from just a mere 2cm away with superb clarity, and the telephoto lens takes in 56% more light, on top of delivery a 10x zoom at optical quality.

Software Features

Remember how Google wanted AI to be at the centre of the Pixel 8 lineup? Here’s where things get crazy good.

Let’s be honest, these days, new phone launches feature just minor upgrades that the average user couldn’t care much about. But this time, the Pixel 8 lineup has exclusive and actually useful features that I’m excited to share with the Seedly community!

Best Take

Ever took an almost perfect group shot just to realise that one of your friends or family was blinking in that shot but everyone else had their best smiles on? Yea, it’s frustrating I know.

Aptly named Best Take, this feature allows you to snap a few shots and then creates a blended photo where everyone has their best look!

Source: Google

During our testing, we had eight people take a few shots together and the feature worked without a hitch! I was honestly expecting a glitch or the picture to look a little weird but this was not the case.

This is definitely one of the most helpful features that is exclusive to the Pixel 8 lineup!

Magic Editor

Alongside the game-changing Best Take feature, Magic Editor is an advanced editor that uses generative AI to reposition and resize subjects, or use presets to make the background pop.

Audio Magic Eraser

It seems like tech companies love equating technology to magic with all their naming conventions. Jokes aside, this feature is one of my personal favourites.

In essence, the Audio Magic Eraser does as its name implies, it not only removes background noise from your videos, but separates them into layers such as “Speech”, “Music”, “Crowd”, “Nature”, “Noise”, and “Wind”.

From there, you can adjust the volume of each layer for your desired sound. Real cool!

However, this feature is only available for videos and not audio tracks (which is kind of weird if you ask me). On the bright side, the Audio Magic Eraser is an on-device feature which means that you can import your old videos and let it work its magic.

Night Sight

As someone who regularly films in low light conditions, I was pretty satisfied with the night sight feature. Compared to my older Samsung S22+, the videos were indeed of better quality and a bit brighter. That said, it’s nothing really to write home about.

Seven Years of Software Updates

If everything above doesn’t get you excited, perhaps this will! The Google Pixel 8 lineup will get a whopping seven years of software updates (and security updates)! This is more than both Apple and Samsung, with Apple giving about five years and Samsung giving four years of software updates and five years of security updates.

Sure, you may argue that the hardware may deteriorate well before then and you may have to replace the battery by the fourth or fifth year. But assuming, you take good care of your phone, the Pixel 8 can last you till 2030 on the latest software!

This comes at a perfect timing too when more consumers like us are keeping our phones for longer instead of upgrading every year or two, making the Pixel 8 a very value-for-money flagship phone!

For those who are skeptical about the Pixel’s durability, here’s what one Reddit user has to say:

This time around, we are getting even more platforms to buy the new Pixel lineup.

As for the Google Pixel Watch 2, it will be available at Amazon, Challenger, Shopee, Singtel starting 12 October 2023.

Is the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro Worth it?

Source: Google
The Google Pixel 8 lineup goes up against flagships such as the Apple iPhone 15 and the Samsung Galaxy S23.

I’d say it’s a serious contender right now with the longest software support in the market and the useful new features mentioned above.

If you’re in the market for a new flagship model, you’ll definitely want to have the Pixel 8 on your radar.

That said, if your phone is still serving you well, take some time to consider if you really need a new phone before making an impulse purchase decision.
