SUBSCRIPTION BASED GRAB

Grab's New Subscription Service in Singapore, GrabClub, is it worth it?

profileCherie Tan

The day has arrived. Subscription-based rides.

Following Deliveroo’s move to a monthly subscription service that offers unlimited free delivery with Deliveroo Plus to all its users for $10.90/month, Grab has moved towards that direction and came up with their very own subscription service – GrabClub.

I guess this is their way of ensuring we are stuck to Grab with a subscription service than to jump onboard with Go-jek who recently launched their services islandwide.

4 kinds of GrabClub Passes

GrabClub consists of 4 elements which Grab tries to cater to every one in Singapore possible (well except those that don’t cab).

The 4 types of GrabClub passes are:

  1. All Access Pass
  2. Short Commute Pass
  3. Flat Fare Ride Pass
  4. Food Pass

  • Actual Expenses = Total Expenditure (B) – Total Savings (A)
  • Total Savings is calculated by maximising all the benefits given. (i.e. reaching the cap on the discount)
  • Total Expenses is calculated by how much you need to spend in order to maximise all the benefits and the subscription cost.

At the moment, GrabClub offers 3 kinds of subscription for their pilot programme:

  1. GrabClub All Access Pass (Basic)
  2. GrabClub All Access Pass (Premium)
  3. GrabClub Food Pass

Don’t worry if you are not part of the pilot programme, Grab will officially launch their All Access Pass in the 1Q of 2019.

They also announced that they would be introducing a wider selection of subscriptions in 2019.

How much do you have to spend on Grab before saving?

1. Minimum Grab Usage (To make it worth it)

By looking at Grab Rides perks alone, we have calculated how much the discount is worth and how much do you have to use Grab to make your GrabClub “worth it”:

 GrabClub
BASIC
GrabClub
PREMIUM
Benefit #1:
20 rides at 20% off GrabShare rides
(capped at S$4 each)
To at least earn back $12 in a month:

1) 3X GrabShare rides worth $20 each

2) 4X Grab rides worth $30 each

3) Any combination to save you $12
To at least earn back $20 in a month:

1) 3X GrabShare rides worth $11.40 each; or

2) 4X Grab rides worth $20 each

3) Any combination to save you $20
Benefit #2:
10 rides at 10% off Grab rides
(capped at S$3 each)

2. Maximum Grab Usage (Any more than this would not be worth it)

Also, that being said, we have also calculated how much each ride should not exceed:

 GrabClub
BASIC
GrabClub
PREMIUM
Benefit #1:
20 rides at 20% off GrabShare rides
(capped at S$4 each)
One GrabShare should not exceed $20One GrabShare should not exceed $11.40
Benefit #2:
10 rides at 10% off Grab rides
(capped at S$3 each)
One Grab ride should not exceed $30One Grab ride should not exceed $20

Since there is a cap on the discount, it would be worth it if you use Grab often for small trips that cost less than $20-$30. The cost would be justifiable only if you Grab often and have trips that cost more than that occasionally.

GrabClub Food Pass at S$7.99/month

The cheapest pass that GrabClub offers at the moment, and its benefits are:

 Grab Food PerksHow much
do you have
to spend?
How much
do you save?
130X Free DeliveryNo minimum order$90
($3 delivery fee)
21X $10 off
(Min. order $20)
$20$10
31X $5 off
(Min. order $10)
$10$5

Essentially, these benefits are exactly in the All Access Passes except without the rides.

How much do you have to spend on GrabFood before saving?

At least 2 GrabFood orders:

  • 1 with a minimum order of $20 and
  • The other a minimum order of $10

And the rest of free delivery is a bonus for you especially if you order in very often, but you are actually paying 38% more for convenience!

Where Do I Get GrabClub?

  • Open your Grab app
  • Under ‘Menu’, there is a ‘GrabClub’ option

Right now, I only have GrabClub Food Pass available as I am not part of the pilot programme.
