Suppose you have been living under a rock.

In that case, you might not have heard of the Health Promotion Board (HPB) National Steps Challenge, a world-first population-level fitness tracker-based physical activity initiative that encourages Singaporeans to lead a more active lifestyle.

While writing about this initiative, I couldn’t help but think of this:

Jokes aside, this initiative has been around since November 2015.

Come October 2021, the HPB will be holding the sixth season of the National Steps Challenge in Singapore.

The premise for this challenge is simple.

Complete HPB activities and be rewarded with up to $85 worth of HPB eVouchers.

Here is all you need to know!

What Is the HPB Singapore National Steps Challenge Season 6?

For this challenge, you can earn rewards for participating in HPB programmes and completing activities such as eating healthier, clocking steps and staying active.

Source: HPB

Note that only new participants of the National Steps Challenge Season Six can earn up to $85 worth of e-Vouchers by exchanging Healthpoints earned under the challenge programme.

Participants who have previously completed all the six tiers for the Steps Rewards and moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPA) Rewards categories before 30 April 2020 will not earn Healthpoints from the Steps and MVPA categories, respectively.

But, they are still eligible for the ‘Early Bird Special’. More on this below.

HPB National Steps Challenge Season 6 Date

You can sign up for the National Steps Challenge from 6 September 2021 to 31 March 2022.

The challenge will be held from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

Who Can Sign Up for the National Steps Challenge Season 6?

  • Singaporeans and PRs with a valid National Registration Identification Card (NRIC) or foreigners with a valid Foreign Identification Number (FIN).
  • They must also be aged 17 years or older (based on birth year) at the point of registration.

LumiHealth participants may join the challenge by withdrawing from the LumiHealth programme.

But one caveat, once you have withdrawn from the LumiHealth programme, you cannot enrol into it again.

Also, once you have enrolled into the National Steps Challenge Season Six, you will be automatically withdrawn from the challenge if you sign up for the LumiHealth programme in the future.

If HPB finds out that you have somehow managed to sign up for both challenges, they reserve the right to claw back any rewards you have earned.

If you do not have a fitness tracker, you can opt in to get a free fitness tracker from HPB.

You have two options:

  • Option 1: Collect a Season Five fitness tracker from now to 10 October 2021 for the early bird reward – while stocks last.

  • 1.3″ colour display
  • Date/Time
  • Steps tracking
  • Heart rate tracking
  • Workout mode, including walking, running, cycling and others
  • Blood Oxygen (SpO2) measurement: SpO2 measures the oxygen saturation in the blood, representing the percentage of oxygen in your blood.
  • Sleep tracking. Sleep tracking is only available to those eligible to participate in the Sleep Challenge. Sleep duration is only viewable on the Healthy 365 app after syncing.

What Are the Challenges You Can Do To Earn Points?

So once you have connected your fitness tracker to the Healthy 365 app, you can start racking up the Healthpoints, which can be exchanged for vouchers.

1Only Healthpoints earned from National Steps Challenge Season 6 between 01 Oct 2021 to 31 Mar 2022 can be used to unlock each tier. Returning participants will start Season Six on the last tier that they unlocked in previous seasons.
All Healthpoints earned will only be credited into the participant’s e-wallet once each tier has been completed.

Steps Category

For the steps category, you will have to walk this amount daily to accumulate points to jump tiers:

  • 5,000 to 7,499 Steps: 10 Healthpoints
  • 7,500 to 9,999 Steps: 25 Healthpoints
  • 10,000 Steps: 40 Healthpoints.

MVPA Category

MVPA is any kind of exercise or activity that raise your heart rate 63 per cent higher than your maximum heart rate.

Your maximum heart rate can be calculated using this formula:

220 – your age = your maximum heart rate in beats per minute (bpm)

But before you proceed, you will have to fulfil a health questionnaire that will determine if you are cleared to carry out MVPAs.

As for the MVPA category, you will have to exercise for this duration daily to accumulate points to jump tiers:

  • 10 – 19 minutes of MVPA: 10 Healthpoints
  • 20 – 29 minutes of MVPA: 25 Healthpoints
  • 30 minutes of MVPA: 40 Healthpoints (max).

If you are a total fitness junkie, you can complete the 10,000 steps, and MVPA challenges to receive a total of $85 worth of HPB e-vouchers.
