Before you buy your first pair of skates or any skates for that matter, it is imperative that you try them out at the store.

You wouldn’t want to be skating for a while and realise you have blisters halfway through. It is an absolutely painful and disappointing experience.

Take it from the guy who wanted to skate 20km but had to drop out midway (and left behind by my friends) just because my skates didn’t fit me properly.

Getting the Right Skate

With so many skates out there, it can be hard to figure out what’s really good for you.

Luckily, here are some reputable skate brands that you can look out for.

Inlines

  • Flying Eagle
  • Powerslide
  • K2
  • Rollerblade
  • Seba
  • FR

Quads

  • Chaya
  • Impala

For those who are on a budget and just want to get started with a cheap pair of skates, Decathlon would be your best bet.

However, I’d personally recommend spending a few bucks more to get a decent pair from one of the brands listed above.

After you’ve done your research and price comparison (remember to look out for deals too), head on down to your preferred store to try them out.

As a general rule of thumb, ensure that you have a snug fit in your skates.

Bring along a set of long thick socks (mid-calf at least to prevent abrasion when skating) so you can try the skates out under “real conditions”.

P.S. Don’t forget to get a full set of guards and a helmet! Safety first!

You’ve got a pair of shiny new skates and can’t wait to start?

Consider taking up skate lessons at a reputable skate school or find a private coach to guide you along.

While learning by yourself is possible, you’ll learn at a safer and accelerated pace when you take up lessons.

As we all know, time = money.

So, for as low as $20 per lesson, you can progress much faster than learning from scratch while getting all the proper techniques down so you can skate safely.

Many of these schools also feature private lessons where you can have classes at your own convenience with a group of friends and family. That said, you’ll have to pay more for the convenience.

For aspiring quad skaters who wanna bring the 90’s back in style, check out Hi Roller for quad skating lessons!

Choosing The Right Coach

You may have come across ads from many other private coaches who offer super cheap inline skate lessons.

But just like finding a good teacher, it is important to do a little research into the coaches that you’re paying for.

One common benchmark that you can look out for is a coach that has passed the Inline Certification Programme (ICP). Most of the skate schools listed above have ICP-certified coaches.

Aside from that, read reviews from other students and take trial lessons (which are often cheaper than regular lessons) to get a sense of what regular lessons are like.

If you’re interested in a particular discipline of skating such as freestyle, slalom, aggressive and others, it is also good to find a coach that is experienced in that discipline.

Places to Skate

Once you’ve gotten decently good at skating, it’s time to hit the streets (park connectors and pavements, not roads please)!

Here are some popular spots or routes that you can consider:

  • Cyclist Park at East Coast
  • Hi Roller Indoor Rink (paid)
  • National Stadium
  • Marina Bay Sands to Stadium (using park connectors)
  • East Coast Park
  • Skateparks (for advanced skaters only)

Make Friends While Skating

Of course, like any hobby, it is much more fun to skate with a friendly community.

By joining communities on social media, you’ll not only make new friends that will help you on your skating journey but also get lots of tips and possible deals to save money on your new hobby!

For example, the FreeWheelers Telegram community has many helpful links such as recommended routes, a list of overseas skate shops that ship to Singapore and of course, a huge welcoming group of skaters.

If you’re a roller disco fan, you can also join the HiSkaters community to enjoy benefits at Hi Roller and discounts at Hvpersport (For clarity, I’m not sponsored by any of these companies).

Don’t say bojio!
