Going to Investment Talks with Your Family. Should you?

Going to Investment Talks with Your Family. Should you?

Cherie Tan

Coming from a typical Singaporean family like myself, money or investments can be quite the sensitive topic.

Or we felt we were never in a position to educate our parents on financial literacy because them being older = more experienced.

Or maybe you do not know the Chinese words to Regular Savings Plan, which is 定期储蓄计划 (dìngqí chúxù jìhuà).

We found something to save the day, there is an investment talk coming up next week! They have workshops in both English and Mandarin if your parents or even yourself is more well-versed in Mandarin. Most importantly, it is FREE OF CHARGE!

It is Singapore Investment Week 2018 hosted by SIAS.

Haven’t heard of SIAS before? Don’t worry me too, so I did the hard work for you.

SIAS – Securities Investors Association (Singapore)

  • Founded in June 1999
  • A registered Charity Organisation aka Non-Profit Organisation;
  • An Institution of Public Character (IPC)
  • They are an advocate for Investor-rights
  • The largest organised investor group in Asia

  • Organised over 1,000 investor education programmes: –
More than 140,000 retail investors have benefited from these programmes (most of it is FREE)

For Investors (like you and I)

  • They stand up for minority shareholders when they are faced with unfair treatment
  • SIAS investors have sought protection from errant traders
  • They conduct dispute resolution sessions regularly to assist investors to resolve issues
  • They help investors to determine the fundamentals and long-term view of a company for investment
