Just Dabao
Although Singapore is considered a food paradise, it’s cannot be considered a perfect utopia due to the amount of food waste generated each year.
According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the amount of food waste Singapore generates has gone up by about 20 per cent in the last 10 years.
In 2019 alone, Singapore generated about 744 million kg of food waste.
To put this into perspective the amount of food being thrown away in Singapore is the equivalent of two bowls of rice per person per day or about 2,685 empty Singapore Airlines (SGX: C6L) Airbus A380 planes — the world’s largest passenger airliner.
Here’s where Just Dabao comes in.
The company is a social enterprise that sets out to reduce food wastage from eateries in Singapore.
Every day, eateries in Singapore throw out tonnes of perfectly edible surplus food. This can be due to a myriad of reasons.
For example, a bakery might have to throw away a whole batch of unsold pastries to clear space for the next batch. There might be also surplus food due to customers or the eatery messing up the order.
Lots of this food gets thrown away — so sayang (Malay for what a pity).
To tackle this problem, Just Dabao partners with the cafes and restaurants in Singapore to sell their unsold food and beverages (F&B).
Just Dabao takes a cut from the merchants.
But, you still get to enjoy the surplus food at much-discounted prices with the company claiming that you can get up to 70 per cent off food!
Not to mention that you can help reduce food waste in Singapore too.
Here’s how it works.
First, you head over to Just Dabao to choose a Shiok Bag.
But, do note that the only information you will get is a vague or sometimes very specific description of the product, items on sale, the proximity of the eatery to Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations and the pickup time.
Take for example this Shiok Bag above.
You can see that you will be getting an unknown flavour of Gelato plus a waffle from the Little Ice Cream Kafe (LICK) and saving about $4.90 with a ~25% off discount.
Another example of a deal would be this baked goods Shiok Bag where you will save about $9.10 with a ~50% discount!
Another important thing to note is that you will need to head over to pick up the food yourself.
In light of the above, do only buy these Shiok Bags if you are comfortable with this uncertainty and the terms provided.
