What’s New in the iPhone 16 Series
Apart from the usual “bigger, better and faster” messaging that goes on every year when a new phone model is released. The iPhone 16 series does actually have a couple significant changes over its predecessor, the iPhone 15 series.
Camera Control
The first thing that you will immediately notice is a new “Camera Control” button, located below the power button, at the bottom right of the phone.Â
The Camera Control button isn’t your regular button either; it’s not even a mechanical button which means you cannot depress it. Instead, it’s touch-sensitive which means you can do a light press or swipe the button to control functions such as zoom. A harder press will provide haptic feedback to make it feel like you are pressing a mechanical button.
Here are some of the key functions of the Camera Control button:
- Click to launch the Camera app. Click again to instantly take a photo.
- In video mode, click to start recording.
- A light press opens controls like zoom.
- With a double light press, you can select another camera setting. Then slide to adjust that setting.
Those who are used to cameras will find this a welcome addition as it mimics how you would take a picture with a DSLR.
Camera System
Another noticeable change is the camera system on the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 plus models have now gone back to a vertically-aligned dual camera system, which makes them capable of recording 3D photos and videos for viewing on Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
As for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, you now get a whopping 48 megapixel ultrawide camera instead of the iPhone 15’s 12 megapixels. This will give you a whole lot more detail when taking wide photos or close-up wide macro shots.
When it comes to video recording on the iPhone Pro models, you can now record up to 4K 120 fps!
Other Upgrades
Along with the above changes, the iPhone 16 series boasts longer battery lives than its predecessor, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max offering up to 33 hours of video playback according to Apple.
The iPhone 16 Pro models also come with larger displays: 6.3 inches on iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches on iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Across the board, the iPhone 16 series come equipped with the faster A18 series chipsets which are also built for Apple’s artificial intelligence dubbed “Apple Intelligence”.
Which iPhone 16 Should You Go For?
Choosing between the models really boils down to battery life, screen sizes, camera hardware and processing speeds.
If you prefer phones with big screens and a strong suite of cameras with faster processing speeds, the iPhone Pro models are perfect for you.
If you’re someone who simply cannot compromise on battery life, just go with the iPhone 16 Pro Max!
Otherwise, the base iPhone 16 model gets you access to the new Camera Control button, AI-features and upgraded camera suites (minus the 48 megapixel ultrawide on the Pro models).
Should You Upgrade Your Existing iPhone to the iPhone 16?
Of course, if you’re holding on to a relic that is on the brink of its existence, the iPhone 16 is a great upgrade.
So let’s compare based on which iPhone you are currently holding onto.
iPhone 14
For current users of the iPhone 14, the big change here is USB-C support and the camera control button.
With USB-C being well, universal. You’ll find things way more convenient than having to find a lightning adapter to charge or transfer files.Â
The Camera Control button on the other hand is a great addition for those who are big on social media or content creation.
If you’re on a budget and aren’t big on taking pictures and videos or AI, the iPhone 15 could be a better alternative that gives you access to USB-C.
Otherwise, the iPhone 16 would be great
iPhone 15
For iPhone 15 users, the only big change here is the Camera Control button with other upgrades being minor such as a bit of a longer battery life and bigger screens (if you upgrade from the iPhone 15 to the iPhone 16 Plus for example).
Again, if you aren’t a huge content creator and couldn’t care less for a gimmicky Camera Control button, I would hold off for the next iPhone instead!
