What happens if a public holiday falls on a weekend?

You may have noticed that some public holidays fall on weekends (or a non-working day).

Unless explicitly stated by MOM, and in accordance with the Employment Act, you are entitled to another day off OR one extra day’s salary in lieu of the public holiday at the gross pay rate.

For example, if you’re on a five-day workweek, Saturday should be considered your non-working day. For a public holiday that falls on a Saturday, you SHOULD get either a day off or salary in lieu.

Whether you get a day off on the next Monday, a flexible off-in-lieu (OIL), or salary-in-lieu (SIL), depends on your company. Thus, we will not consider any OIL days as it varies by company.

Public Holiday: New Year’s Day 2025 Singapore

Next year, New Year’s Day falls on Wednesday, 1 Jan 2025, which makes it sort of awkward to take leave if you don’t have many left.

Leaves to take:

  • Monday, 30 Dec 2024 (optional)
  • Tuesday, 31 Dec 2024 (optional)
  • Thursday, 2 Jan 2025
  • Friday, 3 Jan 2025

Assuming your leave cycle renews at the start of the year, you could take two days off on Thursday, 2 Jan 2025, and Friday, 3 Jan 2025 for a long five day break.

You could also stretch it further if you have leaves left for 2024 by taking leave on Monday, 30 Dec 2024, and Tuesday, 31 Dec 2024 for a whopping nine day break (Saturday 28 Dec 2024 to Sunday, 5 Jan 2025)!

Probably a good time to work on your New Year’s resolutions!

Public Holiday: Chinese New Year 2025 Singapore

In 2025, Chinese New Year will fall on Wednesday, 29 Jan 2025 and Thursday, 30 Jan 2025.

Leaves to take:

  • Monday, 27 Jan 2025
  • Tuesday, 28 Jan 2025
  • Friday, 31 Jan 2025

This is probably THE best time to use the bulk of your leaves as you can get a long nine day break (Saturday 25 Jan 2025 to Sunday, 2 Feb 2025) with just three days of leave!

I would most likely use this time for an overseas vacation, but of course, expect flight tickets to be more expensive during this period.

Public Holiday: Labour Day 2025 Singapore

In 2025, Labour Day will fall on Thursday, 1 May 2024.

This one’s kind of a no-brainer as you can get a four-day long weekend with just one day of leave!

Public Holiday: Vesak Day 2025 Singapore

In 2025, Vesak Day will fall on Monday, 12 May 2025.

Public Holiday: Hari Raya Haji 2025 Singapore

In 2025, Hari Raya Haji will fall on Saturday, 7 Jun 2025.

Leaves to take:

  • Monday, 9 Jun 2025

This one’s a bummer as there won’t be a public holiday on the following Monday, 9 Jun 2025. Depending on your company, you can either use your AL or OIL to make it a long weekend.

P.S. If you’re wondering why I chose a Monday rather than Friday, it’s because Fridays are mostly wind-down days anyway!

Public Holiday: National Day 2025 Singapore

In 2025, National Day will fall on Saturday, 9 Aug 2025.

Leaves to take:

  • Monday, 11 August 2025

Unfortunately, the following Monday will not be a public holiday either so we’ll have to use an AL or OIL.
